"Hague Tribunal still on schedule for 2017 shutdown"

During 2015, the Appeals Chamber already handed down two judgments - in the Popovic et al and Tolimir cases, Meron said, adding that by the end of the year, based on the assessment of presiding judges, the court will complete the work in all cases except two first and second instance proceedings.

Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz told the UN Security Council meeting in New York that he expects first instance verdicts in the trials of Vojislav Seselj and Radovan Karadzic to be handed down by the end of this year.

Despite the delays in the first and second instance proceedings, Meron assured the Security Council that all cases are still expected to be completed during 2017, as was predicted in earlier forecasts of the court.

Meron cited the health status of some defendants and the departure of employees from the court as the tribunal's "biggest challenges."

The trial of Goran Hadzic has been temporarily suspended due to the health of the accused, while Ratko Mladic's trial now has four court days a week, on the recommendations of the doctors, said Meron.

"The judges that sit on the panels in the cases to which this applies are making every effort to limit the delay associated with these factors, while ensuring that the Hague Tribunal fulfills its obligations to provide the detainees with adequate health care," Meron said.
