Court finds nine guilty of war crimes

Three of those convicted were sentenced to the maximum prison sentence of 20 years, including the first accused Toplica Miladinović, Milojko Nikolić, and Dejan Bulatović.

The Serbian War Crimes Prosecution charged them with war crimes against civilians carried out in the municipality of Peć in April and May 1999.

Srećko Popović was sentenced to ten years in prison, and Slaviša Kastratović and Boban Bogićević to two. Abdulah Sokić was sentenced to 12 years, Ranko Momić to 15, and Siniša Mišić to five years in jail.

The court acquitted Radoslav Brnović and Veljko Korićanin.

The indictment charged that the defendants committed murder, rape, destruction of property and other offenses and showed exceptional ruthlessness and cruelty. The youngest victim was 19 and the oldest 87 years old.

All the accused, during the closing arguments, pleaded not guilty to the murder of civilians during attacks on four villages in Kosovo in the spring of 1999.

Although this case was in the public linked to the paramilitary formation "Šakali" presiding judge Snežana Garotić said that the crimes in the villages in the vicinity of Peć were not committed by paramilitaries but by regular units of the Yugoslav Army.
