Ivica Dacic says he ordered the Police Directorate to suspend two officers who were seen abusing a man in their custody in a video posted on the internet. The incident took place in a police station in the northeastern town of Vrsac, in Vojvodina, in June 2007. Policemen suspended after abuse video surfaces The victim of the beating was a young Roma (Gypsy) man. Dacic, who serves as interior minister and deputy PM in the current government, said that an internal investigation into the case had already been conducted, but that now that the video was made public, the case would be revised. Police Directorate Chief Mladen Kuribak stated that the officers seen in the video were Aleksnadar A. and Bojan B., while their victim was identified as Danijel S. "The Municipal Public Prosecution received a report in this matter on October 27, 2007. Policemen in question are still working, because in their statements all three - the police officers and the young man - denied that what can be seen in the video ever happened," Kuribak explained. Police Director Milorad Veljovic stated that he gave orders to have MUP's High Tech Crime Unit involved in the case, "so that the MUP can present the public with the whole truth". Veljovic also said that all those responsible, regardless of rank, "will be identified and processed". The footage posted on the internet caused public outrage in Serbia. Human rights NGOs were the first to react, demanding that criminal proceedings be launched against those who abused the Roma man.
