Police look into police brutality case

A video showing a police officer mistreating and hitting a young Roma, which appeared on YouTube, was taken at a Vrsac police station in 2007, B92 has learned. Police officials say that all those who took part in the abuse will be held responsible. According to the law, the envisaged punishment for torture is up to eight years in prison. Police look into police brutality case Even though police know the abuser’s identity, they did not want to release his name. Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic told B92 that the video had been made in 2007. He said that police were trying hard to restore public’s confidence and that it was therefore necessary that all those who tarnished their reputation were brought to justice. “All those responsible will be identified and tried, regardless of whether it is an ordinary police officer or someone above him. Nobody must be protected,” Veljovic told B92. The video showing the beating has caused strong reactions in public. Human rights NGOs have called on the authorities to file charges against the police officers who abused the young man.
