The Miladin Kovacevic case will be opened to the public next week, according to State Secretary in the Justice Ministry Slobodan Homen. Homen told B92 that he believed that the negotiations between the Serbian government and the United States regarding Kovacevic could culminate with the U.S. allowing him to stand trial in Serbia. MoJ: Kovacevic case set to go public “The negotiations are still ongoing, but they are nearing their end. Right now, I can say, with some certainty, that we will remove the state secret tag from the case soon, and that the negotiations will be concluded in the best interests of the citizens and the Republic of Serbia,” Homen said. Kovacevic, who is accused by the New York courts of brutally assaulting fellow student Bryan Steinhauer, fled the U.S. on a passport illegally issued to him by Serbian Consulate officials. Meanwhile, Homen said that there was no reason to believe that Goran Davidovic, the leader of the far-right Nacionalni Stroj (tr. National Formation) organization, was located in Italy, adding that there was a possibility that he was still in Serbia. “His parents said that he was in Italy. We have no reason to believe this. Why would we believe his parents, who might be protecting him? The fact is that he is on the run and that he did not report to serve the prison sentence dealt out to him. A warrant is out for his arrest and we will put out an Interpol warrant as well,” he added. Justice Minister Snezana Malovic said that she had discussed the Davidovic case this week during her visit to Italy. Davidovic’s one-year sentence was upheld on March 16, and he was due to report to the prison ten days later. He, along with another 20 or so of his colleagues, attacked and insulted guests at an anti-fascism conference in Novi Sad in November 2005. The state prosecution, on the initiative of the Justice Ministry, has petitioned the Serbian Constitutional Court to outlaw Nacionalni Stroj’s work, arguing that the organization promotes racial and national hatred.
