The first trial in the Kosovska Mitrovica District Court has resumed after a year-long interval. EULEX opened proceedings in the court against two men accused of a robbery in the Leposavic region in October 2007. The trial is operating under UNMIK criminal laws. EULEX judges in Pristina yesterday issued the first EULEX verdict against Kosovo Albanians, charged with war crimes from 1998. The trial had been scheduled for Monday, but was adjourned due to a protest by former court workers, who insisted that EULEX judges’ mandates and the laws by which the court functions be established, opposing any application of Kosovo institution laws. Former court workers in Kosovska Mitrovica did not protest yesterday ahead of the beginning of the trial. Ljubomir Pantovic, counsel for the defense, told B92 that it appeared there was no longer any reason not to resume the first trial in the Kosovska Mitrovica court after a year’s break. Former Serb court workers insist that the stamp of the Republic of Kosovo should not appear on court documents and lists.

The trial of two Serbs charged with robbery has resumed at the District Court in Kosovska Mitrovica with four witnesses taking the stand.

The two men are charged with breaking into an elderly couple’s home in Gnježane, in the Leposavić region of northern Kosovo.
