Probe against ex-Student Games chief expanded

The Belgrade First Municipal Court has proposed expanding the inquiry against former Univerzijada 2009 CEO Siniša Jasnić.

The Belgrade First Municipal Court has proposed expanding the inquiry against former Univerzijada 2009 CEO Sinisa Jasnic. The investigation against Jasnic is focused on the purchase of equipment for Serbian national team members for the World Student Games in Bangkok in 2007. Even though the investigation ended in December, the prosecution stated that the contract signed with Croatian company Varteks would come in for further investigation. Jasnic is accused of abuse of position after signing a multi-million euro contract with Varteks for the purchase of kits for Serbian athletes, coaches and volunteers at the games in Bangkok, without calling a prior tender. Jasnic resigned as Univerzijada 2009 CEO and from all positions related to next October’s Games, and was replaced by Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, the vice-president of the Univerzijada 2009 Project. The former Student Games boss is also tied to other financial scandals including deals with Porsche and Swiss Timing, and his decision to sign an agreement with himself awarding him compensation of half a million euros in the event of his dismissal. Jasnic never received this money because he resigned.
