Tomorrow will mark the fifth anniversary since the murder of two Kosovo Serb teenagers. Four others were wounded when fire from automatic rifles was opened on them from an ambush as they were swimming in the Bistrica River, in Gorazdevac, near Pec, western Kosovo. Today, a church service to commemorate the deaths of Ivan Jovovic, 19, and Pantelija Dakic, 12, will be held. Kosovo police spokesman Veton Elshani was quoted by Beta news agency today as saying that they continue to search for the perpetrators and that the case "will not be forgotten". Although then UNMIK police commissioner Stefan Voller said "every stone will be turned to find the children's killers", while UNMIK offered a reward of EUR 1mn for their capture, they remain at large. At the time, the UN Security Council held an emergency session strongly condemning the murders. After the attack five years ago, UNMIK said in a statement that "an unknown number of perpetrators hiding in the bushes opened fire from Kalashikovs on a group of teenagers". Locals said that the shooting came from the Zahac village, inhabited by ethnic Albanians, and that the fire was aimed at a group of some 50 Serbs, 30 of which were children, bathing in the river. There are 750 Serbs living in Gorazdevac today, compared to 2,000 that the village had before 1999. The killing of the two Serb teenagers, the murder of 14 Serb farmers harvesting their crop in Staro Gracko, the bomb attack on a bus carrying Serbs near Podujevo that killed 11, and the murder of the Stolic family near Obilic count among the most serious crimes committed against the province's Serbs since the arrival of the international forces there after the 1999 war. One person, who has still not been processes by the courts, was arrested in connection to the Staro Gracko crime. Two months ago, ethnic Albanian Florim Ejupi was sentenced to 40 years in jail for planting a bomb under the bus in Podujevo. The other cases remain unsolved, with no suspects in custody.
