The trial of those accused of atrocities at Ovcara farm near Vukovar in 1991 has been closed to the public. A second protected witness is testifying today. Ovcara retrial to be closed to public The trial restarted last March after the Supreme Court overturned the first instance ruling of the Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Chamber. At this morning’s hearing the court was informed by an official letter that former JNA officer Veselin Sljivancanin did not wish to testify in Belgrade. Sljivancanin is currently serving a five-year sentence for war crimes in The Hague. The defendants are accused of executing over 200 Croat prisoners at the farm on the night of November 20/21, 1991. Vukovar Territorial Defense commander Miroljub Vujovic, his deputy Stanko Vujanovic, Leva Supoderica volunteer unit commander Milan Lancuzanin, and volunteers, Predrag Milojevic, Predrag Dragovic, Djordje Sosic, Miroslav Djankovic, Ivan Atanasijevic and Sasa Radak were all sentenced to twenty years imprisonment under the first instance rulings. Vujo Zlatar, Milan Vojinovic and Jovica Peric were sentenced to 15 years; Predrag Madzarac to 12; Nada Kalaba, the only female among the accused, to 9; and Goran Mugosa to five. Marko Ljuboja and Slobodan Katic were both acquitted.

Ovčara retrial to be closed to public

The trial restarted last March after the Supreme Court overturned the first instance ruling of the Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Chamber. At this morning’s hearing the court was informed by an official letter that former JNA officer Veselin Šljivančanin did not wish to testify in Belgrade.

Šljivančanin is currently serving a five-year sentence for war crimes in The Hague.

The defendants are accused of executing over 200 Croat prisoners at the farm on the night of November 20/21, 1991.

Vukovar Territorial Defense commander Miroljub Vujović, his deputy Stanko Vujanović, Leva Supoderica volunteer unit commander Milan Lančužanin, and volunteers, Predrag Milojević, Predrag Dragović, Đorđe Šošić, Miroslav Đanković, Ivan Atanasijević and Saša Radak were all sentenced to twenty years imprisonment under the first instance rulings.

Vujo Zlatar, Milan Vojinović and Jovica Perić were sentenced to 15 years; Predrag Madžarac to 12; Nada Kalaba, the only female among the accused, to 9; and Goran Mugoša to five.

Marko Ljuboja and Slobodan Katić were both acquitted.
