The Supreme Court has remanded four members of the Scorpions paramilitary unit in custody for a further three months. Veljko Djukic, Dragan Medic, Dragan Borojevic and Miodrag Solaja were arrested on October 18, 2007 in Sremska Mitrovica and an investigation against them is under way on suspicions of war crimes committed against civilians in Podujevo in 1999. Scorpions remanded in custody According to the Supreme Court, they have been remanded in custody because of the possibility of witness intimidation and the severity of the crimes in question. The investigation request states that on March 28, 1999, as members of the Scorpions paramilitary formation that was operating at the time under the command of Serbian MUP, the suspects fired several projectiles into a group of Albanian civilians, mainly women and children, in the garden of the Gashi family house. 14 people were killed, and five seriously injured. Sasa Cvjetan has already been convicted and sentenced to 20 years for the crimes at the Belgrade District Court. After a lengthy investigation, another Scorpion, Dejan Demirovic, was acquitted last April. Besides the atrocities in Podujevo, four members of the Scorpions have been sentenced to a total of 58 years for the murder of six Srebrenica Muslims in Trnovo in July 1995.
