Vladimir Vukcevic says Carla Del Ponte’s report on Hague cooperation was "not as bad as the media made it out to be." Serbia is closer to initialing the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) than before, the war crimes prosecutor told B92 after returning from Brussels where he met with European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and officials of the European Parliament. “Media made Hague report sound negative” He said that he believes that the SAA will be initialed after Chief Hague Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte’s visit to Belgrade on October 25. “We went in an atmosphere that was not agreeable, when it was interpreted here that Ms. Del Ponte said that the report on cooperation with the Hague Tribunal was negative." "However, it was the interpretation of our media and they simply convinced us that this was the case. The situation is that we are closer to the initialing that we were before,” Vukcevic said. He also said that Del Ponte’s report "does not even exist yet," and that it will be given after her visit on October 25. Del Ponte’s spokesperson Olga Kavran had a similar stance. She said that the media’s presentation of Del Ponte’s assessment of cooperation in Luxembourg was "significantly more harsh and negative than the actual assessment." Regarding European Parliament official Jelko Kacin’s statement that the Serbian government has "prepared measures that will make an impact on cooperation," Vukcevic said that he cannot discuss operative measures. “I can only say that the measures have been taken. The Council for National Security has set rewards for information on Hague indictees and the parliament will receive a proposal for a law regarding helpers,” Vukcevic said, adding that these measures show Serbia’s political will for completing its obligations. He also said that state agencies need to work together more, adding that some accounts of Hague fugitives that are located aboard have not yet been investigated, "but it is obvious by their ability to hide away for so long that the fugitives are wealth individuals." The prosecutor also said he is waiting for an answer from the United Nations Security Council on having Serbs convicted by the Tribunal serve their sentences in Serbia. “I think this is a good idea and it encourages those who would want to surrender to do so,” Vukcevic said.
