Bajatovic also told the N1 broadcaster that although Russia has canceled the project Serbia has no alternative to Russian gas.

He said that Serbia invested 30 million euros in South Stream - "while the fate of this money will be known once the Tesla project has been launched."

Bajatovic "also believes that the money invested in the joint project, the joint risk will not be returned to Serbia" but that the country "in any case benefits from contracts with Russia" and at the same time rejected "the criticism that the energy agreement with Russia should be reexamined."

"We would never get a contract like that. We are free to do what we want with the (Russian) gas, something no other country can," said Bajatovic.

He announced that the gas storage facility in Banatski Dvor will be expanded, and that the company that manages it, "which is performing well enough," will finance this rather than the state or Srbijagas.

Bajatovic said that the price of gas will not go up and that it depended on "several factors" whether it would become cheaper. He added that Serbia is "among the countries with the lowest price of gas."

Bajatovic also denied allegations that the quality of natural gas was not the same "everywhere all the time," and explained that "air is not being added to it - since that would cause explosions."
