The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this in a statement issued on Thursday.

"We consider this step as a manifestation of inertia in Washington's policy, reflecting the logic of confrontation on the European continent, creating new dividing lines," the statement said, and added:

"We note that the dragging of Montenegro into NATO is carried out without taking into account the real opinion of the people in this Balkan country. At the same time, millions of dollars are allocated to support pro-NATO puppet NGOs in an attempt to create the illusion of broad public support for the one-sided course of the Montenegrin leadership."

"We consider the stance to include Montenegro in NATO as deeply erroneous, contrary to the fundamental interests of the people of this country, something detrimental to stability in the Balkans and in Europe as a whole," the MFA said.
