18 years since killings, expulsion of Serbs in Croatia

OKUCANI, BELGRADE Croatia's state leadership gathered today in Okucani, western Slavonia, to mark the 18th anniversary of Operation Flash. During the attack, Croatian forces occupied Serb part of Western Slavonia - the UN protected area Sector West - in only 30 hours. 18 years since killings, expulsion of Serbs in Croatia After a mass for Croatian victims, President Ivo Josipovic, a government delegation headed by Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and a delegation of the Croatian parliament laid wreaths and lit candles at the Central Cross in the Memorial Park of Croatian Knights. During the operation, a total of 42 Croats were killed while 162 were wounded. Again this year, nothing has been said about the Serb victims or crimes against Serbs committed during and after the operation which, resulting in the exodus of 15,000 ethnic Serbs to Bosnia-Herzegovina, a small number of whom have returned, drastically changed the ethnic composition in this area. In its report from 2003, Croatian Helsinki Committee pointed out that 83 Serb civilians were killed - 30 in attacks on Serb refugee convoys, mainly in the Prasnik forest, while 53 of them were murdered in their houses. The biggest massacre happened in the village of Medari, on May 1, 1995, when Croatian forces brutally killed 22 out of 24 civilians who were in the village at the time. According to the Documentary-informative center Veritas, 283 Serbs were killed or went missing during this operation, including 57 women and nine children. So far, no one has been held accountable for war crimes against the Serbs, although NGOs point to a large number of war crimes committed at the time.
