BELGRADE Dusan Bajatovic has told a Belgrade tabloid that it was "in his personal interests" that all financial abuses in the Azotara case be thoroughly investigated. Bajatovic - a vice-president of the ruling SPS party and director of the state-owned Srbijagas natural gas company - spoke in reference to the wrongdoings related to the Pancevo-based factory. SPS official "wants to see thorough corruption probe" According to him, in dealings related to Azotara, "until the stock market" no law was broken, while "what happened at the stock market" was not within his authority. It is up to the investigators to determine if there was anything illegal and then for the procedures to be given a court conclusion, Bajatovic told the Kurir daily, and stressed that "everything he did was in the interest of the state": "I'm guilty when the state wants to conduct a social policy via the price of gas, via privatizations. I have been called a state tycoon, but all I do is implement the policy of the government." As for Azotara - which at one point went from its basic business of producing artificial fertilizers to trading in wheat - Bajatovic said, "we put the ruined Azotara back on its feet". He also denied that his deputy at Srbijagas was arrested, explaining that the person in question was "a representative of state's capital". Bajatovic stressed that the investigation "should be a state secret", and that he was not summoned to questioning by the police, while according to him, checks have been ongoing at Srbijagas "and all other companies" for some time.
