The striking miners in a bauxite mine in northern Motnengro have ended the protest and left the pits. They spent the past eight days there demanding to be paid overdue wages and other debts. Montenegro: Miners end strike The miners decided to end the strike after receiving written guarantees from Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic that their demands would be met. The guarantees were presented by Minster of Labor and Social Care Suad Numanovic. “We have received the PM’s written guarantee that all of our demands will be met and we came out of the pit,” said the miners’ representative Ratko Batricevic. Djukanovic previously accused the Russian owner, En+ Group's Central European Aluminum Company (CEAC) of “unbelievable irresponsibility” toward the workers and “unfounded arrogance”. The Montenegrin government recently signed a settlement contract with Oleg Deripaska’s company that owns the bauxite mine and Podgorica aluminum processing plant KAP, providing the Russians with EUR 135mn “for the survival of the aluminum industry in Montenegro”. The signing of the contract made the state once again a part-owner of the mine and KAP.
