President Boris Tadic, who is still in New York, says that Serbia’s chances of gaining UN GA support for the ICJ resolution are now higher. Tadic is attending the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly, that will in October decide whether to ask the International Court of Justice’s opinion on the legality of the Kosovo Albanians’ unilateral declaration of indpendence. Tadic: Initiative moves closer to ICJ Tadic spoke to journalists last night to say that foreign statesmen and officials are reacting well to Belgrade’s initiative, and confirmed that the voting will take place in early October. “I am convinced that this resolution is beneficial not only for Serbia, in the long and short term, but also for the UN in restoring its authority of respect of international law, and establishing a mechanism for conflict solution,” he said. According to him, after the declaration in Pristina, “other problematic processes in tension areas on the world map started too”. Tadic also explained that Serbia’s diplomatic activity will not end with the closing of the UN General Assembly. “We will influence our friends and partners until the last moment, but also those who think otherwise,” said the president, adding that he is a cautious optimist “because it isn’t over until the game is over”. “This is one big political game, a political debate. Stakes are high. Serbia would restore her international credibility. The passing of a resolution of this kind would mean that Serbia has moved beyond the pressure, the agony that lasted for 18 years, and that Serbia moved, step by step, toward creating new capacities for her foreign policy, but also for the defense of the domestic issue of the country’s integrity in Kosovo,” Tadic concluded.
