Serbia introduces new model for housing Roma

Director of the Serbian Government’s Office for Human and Minority Rights Suzana Paunovic and UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing Leilani Farha met in Belgrade, and specified that "the new model of housing will be implemented with the support of donors," Tanjug reported.

The Danish Refugee Council has conducted activities within the framework of a rural household program resulting in 31 Roma families being relocated from unsanitary settlements to rural homes, the Serbian official said.

Paunovic added that "a project of mapping substandard Roma settlement, carried out in the framework of the 'We Are Here Together - European Support for Roma Inclusion' project, had resulted in a total of 583 such settlements identified in 169 municipalities in the country."

She also said that a list of priority interventions in each of the settlements had been prepared based on a detailed analysis in 20 pilot municipalities in Serbia.

The meeting was also attended by Office of the UN Human Rights Adviser Claude Cahn and UN Human Rights Officer Juana Sotomayor.
