BELGRADE Croatia held a central manifestation in the town of Knin on Sunday, marking the 17th anniversary of the Operation Storm. The Croatian army and police Operation Storm started on August 4, 1995 and lasted for four days. The Croat forces killed 1,650 and expelled more than 200,000 Serbs during the operation. Croatia celebrates anniversary of Operation Storm Croatian top state officials attended the celebration in Knin like previous years but representatives of the Serbian National Council did not attend the manifestation. However, Serbian Democratic Forum leader Veljko Dzakula accepted Croatian President Ivo Josipovic's invitation and attended the celebration. Croatia’s President Ivo Josipović said at the celebration of the 17th anniversary of the Operation Storm that Serb victims needed to be recognized.

“Croatia won the war and defended its borders. Croatia needs to win in peace as well, which means to tackle the economic difficulties, secure human rights and religious and minority freedoms,” he added.

The Croatian president, Prime Minister Zoran Milanović and parliement Acting Speaker Josip Leko expressed their gratitude to the defenders who won the war.
