BELGRADE EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule says it is realistic to expect that the European Council will decide in March to open EU accession talks with Serbia. He added that Serbia needed to meet conditions that had been set. EU commissioner: Serbia could start EU talks in June “Just as it was proved by granting the EU candidate status in March, there is not doubt that the EU is impatiently waiting to start the pre-accession talks with Serbia once it makes enough progress in visible and sustainable improvement of relations with Kosovo,” Fule told Belgrade-based daily Vecernje novosti. He underlined that Serbia was not expected to recognize Kosovo's independence, while the Serb community in Kosovo could and should continue to receive support from Belgrade in a transparent way. Fule underlined that it was great news that the meeting between Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci in Brussels on December 4 yielded such an important progress and agreement on integrated management of administrative crossings, liaison officers and protection of religious and cultural heritage. “Moreover, since September Serbia has taken numerous valuable steps in the implementation of the agreements reached in the dialogue to date,” the enlargement commissioner said, adding that this showed a true level of engagement of both parties in the dialogue. “This makes me believe that additional results will be reached in the first half of 2013, which will enable us to recommend the beginning of the accession talks with Serbia,” Fule was quoted as saying.
