The Serbian government will hold a meeting on Saturday to decide on when Belgrade will apply for European Union candidate status. Before the meeting of the cabinet’s Council for European Integrations, which Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic will preside over, President Boris Tadic will be present at the meeting of the council and government. Decision on candidacy application expected Tadic announced on Friday in Copenhagen that the government will make a final decision on Saturday on when Serbia should apply for the status of a candidate for EU membership, and added that “there is no need to rush.” “We have arguments for and against applying for candidacy. Spanish sources in Brussels stated that Belgrade could submit its application to the EU on either the Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Christmas or on the Orthodox New Year’s Day, which falls on Janaury 14. Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said that he believes that Serbia will apply very soon. Spain will be presiding over the EU as of January 1.
