Pres. Boris Tadic and Vojvodina Executive Council head Bojan Pajtic have agreed to bring the province’s statute before MPs in August at the latest. According to Politika newspaper, the deal was not reached at a secret meeting between the two men, as certain media reported, but at a regular weekly meeting of the Democratic Party collegium, attended by Pajtic as the party’s representative in Vojvodina. Tadic, Pajtic "reach agreement over statute" Vojvodina Hungarian leader Istvan Pastor, at whose party convention at the weekend Tadic assured that the Vojvodina statute would seen be adopted, told the daily that he finally believed his coalition partners. “After a long period of time, this is the first time that a senior DS official has announced a time frame in which the statute and the accompanying law will enter parliamentary procedure. Though life is cruel, miracles do sometimes happen. Let’s hope that a miracle happens now,“ he said. Politika’s source claims that there was obstruction to the move from G17 and Socialist ministers. Reportedly, while G17 ministers boasted in public that it was they who were first to finish the work of drafting the Law on Authorities, they did just the opposite. Meanwhile, unhappy with the statute’s text, the Socialists obstructed the procedure, even though only a few weeks earlier their MPs had approved it without any objections. If, on top of all this, Politika adds, you add the government’s inadequate reaction to the sluggishness in drafting the law, then the president had no choice but to step in, impose his authority and take matters into his own hands.
