During his visit to Spain earlier this week, President Boris Tadic participated in a Madrid forum New Economy and spoke with the Spanish Employer’s Society. Tadic invited businesspeople in Madrid to advance economic cooperation with Serbia and participate in large approaching infrastructure projects. Tadic: I'll meet with Obama soon He also said that he wanted to turn over a new leaf in Serbia-U.S. relations and was convinced he would soon meet with the new U.S. president. “I am sure I will soon meet with President (Barack) Obama and discuss not only our bilateral relations but also perspectives of the region,” said Tadic at the forum. “We need to open a new chapter with the U.S. We need the best possible relations with the U.S., because without U.S. cooperation there is no peace or democracy in the Balkans,” added the president. In Spain, which has not recognized Kosovo Albanians' unilateral independence declaration, Tadic repeated that EU integration and the defense of territorial integrity are Serbian state priorities. “Without Serbian integration in Europe there is no stability in Southeast Europe. Such is the geographical position of my country. Serbia is the central country in Southeast Europe and Serbs live in all countries which border it,” he said. “Additionally, if Serbia lets go of Kosovo, it lets go of the founding principles of international law, which guarantee states’ integrity. In such conditions, every separatist movement could seek the formation of its own state,” he added. Tadic continued that, 10 years after the NATO bombing began, Serbia is nearer to member-state governments, adding that a democratic debate would have to be held about the possibility of Serbia joining the western military alliance. “Only Serbian citizens can decide by referendum whether Serbia should join NATO,” he said. In a debate at the New Economy forum, the Spanish Secretary of State for the EU Diego Lopez Garrido repeated that Spain must continue its support of Serbia in its stance toward Kosovo and EU integration.
