United Serbia (JS) leader Dragan "Palma" Markovic on Thursday stated that "Tomislav Nikolic offered Ivica Dacic a mandate to put together a new government". Dacic heads the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), which ran in the May 6 election in a pre-election coalition with Markovic's party and the United Pensioners (PUPS). SPS leader offered premiership, his ally confirms Markovic made the statement today after his meeting in Jagodina with U.S. Ambassador Mary Warlick. The mandate was offered to Dacic "from the president of Serbia", said he, and added that the coalition was "considering the offer": "We in the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition held a meeting last night, but did not state our position on this, because we were already talking to the DS (Democratic Party)." But Markovic said that Dacic, PUPS leader Jovan Krkobabic, and himself would reach a decision on the offer, and appraised that Serbia would have a new government "in the next 10 to 15 days". Tanjug specifies in its report that the offer came from the Serb Progressive Party (SNS). Krkobabic, meantime, spoke for the Beta news agency to say that he was "not informed about the offer", and that "received no invitation today to attend any kind of government talks".
