A delegation of the Serbian government will take part in a meeting between a European Commission (EC) delegation and a Montenegrin negotiating team. This was announced by the Serbian government's European Integration Office. Serbia attending EC-Montenegro talks The participation of the Serbian delegation is aimed at collecting experience to better prepare Serbia's own EU accession negotiations, the release adds. On March 26-30, the EC will begin the so-called initial screening of the European legislation in the chapters on judiciary and fundamental rights and on justice, freedom and security. The Serbian delegation will be comprised of Director of the government's EU Integration Office Milica Delevic and State Secretaries at the Ministries of Justice and of the Interior, Slobodan Homen and Dragan Markovic, it was announced in a statement in Belgrade. Taking into consideration the region's progress in European integration, the EC has invited representatives of the governments of Serbia and Macedonia to attend the screening meeting as observers, the release says. The statement further adds that the Serbian delegation will attend such a meeting for the first time and that this will serve to prepare Serbia for its own EU accession negotiations, primarily through the strengthening of its administrative capacity for the important step towards the membership of the Union. The screening process involves an examination of the extent to which the laws, regulations and institutions of the candidate state comply with the EU acquis communautaire. After the differences between the country's regulations and EU acquis are analyzed, the parties enter into negotiations on the method of harmonizing the national legislation with the acquis. There is a total of 35 relevant chapters, and the new approach by the European Commission that will be applied to negotiations with the candidate countries implies that the process starts with Chapters 23 (judiciary and fundamental rights) and 24 (justice, freedom and security).
