Tadić continues US visit

Meeting with US Vice President Dick Cheney yesterday, Tadić said that the solution needs to come by way of compromise.

Tadić repeat that Serbia is against independence and insists on the preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“We discussed the Kosovo problem, and I gave the stances of our negotiation team. In that sense, I can say that we have a difference of opinion regarding the future of Kosovo, but at the same time, it is important to maintain close ties with the US, even after the Kosovo status talks are finished, because it is in our strategic interest, in the interest of Serbia.” Tadić said.

Tadić and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed the SOFA agreement, which will regulate the rights and obligations of US soldiers located on, or passing through, Serbian territory.

At a short press conference which was held after the meeting, Rice did not speak about her conversation with Tadić regarding Kosovo. She said that she is satisfied with the way that her talks went with Tadić and that the signing of the SOFA agreement will help create long-term stability in the Balkans.

“We are happy about the constant changes in Serbia and the Balkans in general, which will enable complete peace and stability. Signing the SOFA agreement is possible because of the good relations between Serbia and the United States and I hope that this will further awaken our relations in the field of defense, but also in friendship and unity.” Rice said.

The signing of this agreement should help improve military cooperation between the two countries and will have an effect on the level of help the US will be giving to Serbia for military reforms.

After his meeting with Rumsfeld in Washington, Tadić will be going to Columbus, Ohio, where he will meet with officials of the Ohio National Guard.
