BELGRADE The NIN weekly is reporting that the former state security service (SDB) "planned the murder of journalist Slavko Curuvija for April 10, 1999." This was on the orders of Rade Markovic, the article said, and added that "the date of the execution" was moved for a day later because an SDB operative in charge of surveillance and gathering of information from operatives in the field, did not tell the perpetrators of the murder when Curuvija would be home that day. Murder of journalist "planned for previous day" NIN is basing its report on a source it said was a former high-ranking officer of the SDB. According to this, Milan Radonjic, who at the time served as chief of the Belgrade DB Center, was angry about the "sloppily done work," and ordered to be personally informed about Curuvija's movements "every five minutes" the next day, when the murder was committed. NIN writes that "observations and wiretapping" of Curuvija's home continued after he was killed, and that an operative at the DB headquarters "made notes about the behavior of people who arrived at Curuvija's apartment that day, for example, who cried." The weekly said that there is not only an official note about all this, but there are also statements from all DB members who took part in the following, wiretapping, and planning of Curuvija's liquidation, "first to the new leadership of the Belgrade DB Center, and then to former State Prosecutor Rade Terzic, and in the presence of witnesses." The transcripts of the statements have been in the archives of the State Prosecution for almost a decade, writes NIN. Slavko Curuvija (file) NIN
