BELGRADE Speaker of the Senate of Canada Noel Kinsella said on Tuesday in Belgrade that his country supports Serbia on its way to membership of the European Union (EU). He at the same time expressed his satisfaction about the two parliaments reaching an agreement on avoidance of double taxation, as it will enable Canada to invest more in Serbia. Canada "supports Serbia's EU path" "We support Serbia when it comes to its efforts to join the EU, and we believe that the number 29 will be a number associated with Serbia," Kinsella said at the joint press conference with Serbian Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic, alluding to the fact that Serbia could become the 29th EU member state. Touching on the global economic crisis, Kinsella said that the governments of both countries have had to make difficult decisions, but he believes the time is now “behind us.” Kinsella said that mutual cooperation is necessary in order to deal with challenges successfully. Discussing the relations between two nations, Kinsella said that they are honorable and long-lasting and pointed out that Serbian citizens have been building Canada’s society and Canada is grateful to them for that. The Serbian parliament speaker informed his Canadian counterpart about progress Serbia has been making in the European integration process and with reforms undertaken. Stefanovic emphasized Serbia’s commitment to fighting corruption and crime, and the zero tolerance policy that the Serbian authorities pursue against the phenomena. He said that about 50 Canadian companies are currently operating in Serbia, adding that the cooperation between the two parliaments is creating conditions for more investment from Canada. “We want our cooperation with Canada to become stronger and more intense. We want to open a new page in the relations between Serbia and Canada,” Stefanovic said, adding that the agreement on avoidance of double taxation is creating conditions for Canada to invest more in Serbia, which means creation of new jobs. He added that Kinsella’s visit is very important as this is the first time after many years that a speaker of the Senate of Canada is visiting Serbia.
