NOVI SAD Bojan Pajtic has reiterated that early provincial elections could only be called at the Executive Council’s request or if there is no majority in assembly. “The (provincial) government has a two-thirds majority in assembly, which means that the next provincial elections will be held in 2016,” the Vojvodina Executive Council chairman told Novi Sad-based Hungarian language daily Magyar Szo. “Provincial elections will be held in 2016” He added that a decision of the Constitutional Court of Serbia had significantly limited Vojvodina’s powers, noting that the decision had disputed the fact that Vojvodina is a region that kept European values. “The limitation of Vojvodina’s authorities did not stop with the Constitutional Court’s decision, we have faced numerous situations since then that have shown reduction of powers. For example, the republic government has been illegally using Vojvodina’s assets, the province’s financing still is not in accordance with constitutional guarantees,” Pajtic explained. He claims that the funds made available to citizens of Vojvodina were just a part of the amount guaranteed by the Constitution and that the provincial government had therefore proposed the provincial assembly to adopt a draft declaration that would call the state authorities to respect the Constitution and laws. The Vojvodina Executive Council chairman believes that “it is not natural that the Constitution and laws apply to everyone except for the citizens of Vojvodina”. He added that an “avalanche of insults” had started after the initiative and members of the provincial government “are called separatists and Ustasha just because they called on the authorities to fulfill constitutional guarantees”. According to Pajtic, organizers of protests are “well aware” how wrong claims of separatism are. “There are no separatist tendencies within the provincial administration. Despite that, they keep scaring a part of the public by pointing to enemies in places there are no enemies to begin with,” he stressed. Pajtic added that the protest held in front of the provincial government headquarters in Novi Sad last Friday was legitimate but that it was “regrettable that an atmosphere of lynch was stirred up before the event”.
