BELGRADE Serbia’s foreign policy goals have not changed and its goal is the EU membership because it belongs there, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic has stated. “However, Serbia needs to equally develop its relations with all other countries as well,” he told weekly NIN. Foreign policy goals remain unchanged, FM says “Russia is extremely important to us because of Kosovo. Our partners in the West understand that too. It is important to us that Russia is protecting our territorial integrity with its position and that is only natural,” the minister said and added that the same applied to China. Commenting on relations with neighboring countries, Mrkic said that Belgrade would continue to advocate regional cooperation in order to “smooth things out” and prevent possible misunderstandings and conflicts. “It is meaningless to wait until we have all joined the EU to start treating each other well,” he explained. When asked how he would resist the parties’ influence on the appointment of ambassadors, the minister said that the adoption of a new law on foreign affairs would help. “Diplomacy is a profession that requires top knowledge of the trade. You cannot appoint people just because they belong to some parties. Luckily, everybody is becoming more aware of that and the current government and the president are even exemplary because they support professionalism,” Mrkic was quoted as saying.
