Serbia's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) has not changed relative to 2009, it has been announced. The only country in the region which has a worse rating according to this parameter is Bosnia-Herzegovina at 91, a research conducted by Transparency International shows. Serbia's CPI remains unchanged Presenting the research results, Transparency Serbia President Vladimir Goati told reporters that Serbia, with its CPI at 3.5, ranks as 83rd on the list of 178 countries and territories in which CPI analysis was carried out. Goati stressed that Serbia had progressed until 2007, but that the country has since then recorded a constant stagnation in this domain. He pointed out that the existing political regime in Serbia is leaving too much room for corruption, since the election law promotes an indirect (proportional) election system and the institution of blank MP resignations is still valid. “The system needs to be adjusted to that in other democratic countries, and the Serbian government should provide a stronger support to the work of independent anti-corruption institutions,” Goati said. Transparency Serbia Program Director Nemanja Nenadic said that Kosovo was included in the research for the first time this year, and added that, with CPI at 2.8, it ranked between 110th and 150th on the list. According to Nenadic, Serbia is investing efforts in the fight against corruption and was making progress at the time when appropriate legislations and institutions were to be established, but has been recording stagnation in their implementation. Nenadic said that the monitoring process should be enhanced, and pointed out that Serbia is conducting activities in this domain, which should have positive effects on the country's CPI in the coming years. According to the data of the Anti-Corruption Council within Transparency Serbia, corruption cases in Serbia most commonly refer to the domains of public supplies, judiciary, education, health care, taxes and finances.
