“Serbia should deal with Kosovo issue”

EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele told Reuters that Serbia cannot join the EU if it does not adequately deal with the issue of Kosovo. Fuele said that a candidate with an unresolved issue, or conflict, cannot expect to be allowed to join the EU. “Serbia should deal with Kosovo issue” Earlier in the day, Stefan Fuele met with Serbian officials and stated that Brussels is seriously committed to the Serbian candidacy. Citing an unnamed source in Brussels, Reuters also reports that High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton plans to meet with representatives of Serbia and Kosovo during the UN General Assembly next week, in order to attempt a step forward in negotiations. Ashton wants to consider a framework that would include the date when the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina would start and a list of issues to be discussed, Reuters reported.

Earlier in the day, Stefan Fuele met with Serbian officials and stated that Brussels is seriously committed to the Serbian candidacy.
