Speaker Oliver Dulic says that if he receives 126 signatures calling for his resignation, he will step down. “There’s no point getting into any sort of debate, as it would mean that I didn’t have the confidence of the majority of MPs in parliament,” Dulic told today’s edition of daily Vecernje Novosti. Speaker to resign, if necessary “If, among those 126 signatures, there are signatures from Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) MPs, that is from the majority that nominated not only me, but Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica too, that will mean that we have a new parliamentary majority and a new government,” the speaker pointed out. Asked whether the DSS and the Radicals would form a new government, he replied that that new parliamentary majority would also vote for a new government. He denied that his dismissal would bring the government down. “I won’t be the reason for the government’s collapse. The real reason will be the DSS’s divergence from the five principles on which the government was formed – the resumption of European integration and the battle for Kosovo. That would mark a drastic change in foreign policy,” said Dulic. The speaker expects the government to make its position clear on the Kosovo proposal submitted by the Serb Radical Party (SRS). “If the government gives its opinion, parliament will convene on Friday,“ he added. Dulic explained that if the institutions prove unable to reach a consensus, one option was to ask citizens if they want EU integration or not. “I think a referendum is a good idea, but for the citizens, as they did at the presidential elections, to confirm that they support EU integration, and not isolation,” the speaker told Vecernje Novosti. “We should all sit down round a table to try and find a way out of this situation, so that the state can decide how to overcome the key problems: Kosovo and Europe,” he stressed.
