“We must try to accept both the Serbs’ and the Kosovo Albanians’ wishes and aspiration in the next few weeks. However, if there is failure to reach a solution within a reasonable timetable, then the UN Security Council must decide on Kosovo’s status”, Steinmeier said.

“The goal of the international efforts was to end the Balkans violence. In the long term, this is not possible without determining Kosovo’s status. The room for possible solutions, in view of the war Milošević started and the realities that stem from that, is very small. Kosovo must not and should not become a model for the international law. True, Kosovo was not a republic in the former Yugoslav federation, but the international community was forced to react since Serbs abused the Kosovo Albanians”, the German foreign minister told the daily.

“If Ahtisaari suggested Kosovo’s reintegration into the Serbian state that would mean war. At the same time, it must be made clear Serbia and Kosovo are not on the same international and legal level. That is why supervised sovereignty was proposed”, Steinmeier concluded.
