MOSCOW Edward Snowden has been granted one-year asylum by the Russian authorities and has at last been able to leave the Sheremetyevo airport transit zone. The former CIA employee and NSA contractor was stranded there as a transit passenger since June 23, when he left Hong Kong after publicly revealing the U.S. agency's online spying program. Human rights lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told Itar-Tass that the whistleblower received a certificate granting temporary asylum in Russia for one year. “I cannot say where Snowden is staying now. He is the most wanted person in the world and his security is the priority,” he stated, and added that his client was ready to address the media, but that he needed a day to "adapt." In mid July Snowden decided to requested temporary political asylum in Russia, and agreed to President Vladimir Putin's condition to "end the activities that caused damage to the U.S." In his country, Snowden has been charged with unauthorized communication of national defense information and providing U.S. classified intelligence to an unauthorized person under the 1917 Espionage Act. Reuters is reporting that Snowden's asylum is temporary, and that he has been granted the status of a refugee.
