Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has won the presidential elections in the first round of voting, with 63.9 percent of votes. The central election committee announced that the results were based on 98.47 percent of the ballots counted thus far. Putin wins third term as Russian president Leader of the Communist Party Gennady Zyuganov won 17.18 percent of votes in the ballot held on Sunday. Putin, who is set to take over as president for a six-year term, last night addressed some 100,000 supporters gathered in Moscow to announce his election victory. “We have shown that our people can tell the difference between a desire for renewal and political provocation that only aims to split our country and to usurp its power,” Putin told the rally, according to reports.
