Czech President Vaclav Klaus slammed EU officials for failing to attend the funeral of Poland's President Lech Kaczynski and his wife in Krakow on Sunda "The fact that no one from Brussels has shown up seems inexcusable to me," Klaus told the public service Czech Television in an interview after arriving in the southern Polish city by train and car. Klaus criticizes EU leaders over Kaczynski funeral "We have seen that all those grand phrases about European unity are really nothing but clichés," he added. According to him, the absence of Canadian or Australian leaders can be explained by transportation problems due to airspace closures in Europe, but there was no reason for the Western European and EU leaders not to attend, Itar-Tass news agency has reported. "The fact that Canada's Prime Minister or Australia's Governor-General did not attend the funeral (of the Polish presidential couple) is fairly understandable. But it is absolutely unforgivable that some European leaders and officials from Brussels did not come to the funeral", Klaus told the Czech Radio. "It is a proof that solidarity within the EU is just an empty word," added the Czech President. Kaczynski and his wife Maria were buried with highest state honors at the Wawel Castle Cathedral in Krakow.
