U.S. President Barack Obama's Democratic Party has suffered a major defeat, RFE/RL reported. They lost to the rival Republican Party the Senate seat in the liberal northeastern state of Massachusetts that was held for decades by the late Edward Kennedy, who died last year. Republicans upset Democrats, win Kennedy seat Results show Scott Brown, who has been a Republican state lawmaker, defeating Democrat Martha Coakley in the January 19 special election, winning around 52 percent of the vote. With the win, Brown will become the 41st Republican in the 100-member U.S. Senate – which will give the Republicans the potential to block Obama's and the Democrats' proposed health-care reform legislation and other measures. The Democrats would need 60 votes to overcome Republican maneuvers that could block votes on legislation. The Democrat loss comes as Obama is today marking the end of his first year in office.
