Registration of domains in non-Latin (ASCII) characters will be approved this week – described as the biggest change in internet's 40 years of existence. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will hold a meeting in Seoul, South Korea, where the organization is expected to enable the introduction of a limited number of internationalized country-code top level domain names. Non-Latin character internet domains This could potentially open up the internet to more people around the world since domain name addresses will be written in various Cyrillic scripts, as well as in Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Greek. ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom noted that first non-Latin domains could be in the system in mid-2010. He added that more than half of 1.6bn internet users speak non-Latin script based languages.
