Passenger jet vanishes off Brazil's coast "We are very worried," an official said. "The plane disappeared from the screens several hours ago. It could be a transponder problem, but this kind of fault is very rare and the plane did not land when expected." Reports said a search and rescue operation had begun near the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, CNN reported. The aircraft was bound for Paris's Charles de Gaulle International Airport. Flight AF447 had 216 passengers and 12 crew members, CNN said, citing airline officials. A crisis center was being set up at the airport in Paris, officials said.
