Rupel, whose country holds the 6-month rotating EU presidency, told his hosts in Tbilisi that Kosovo, the Serbian province whose majority ethnic Albanians are seeking independence, is a "unique case", that must not be viewed as a precedent to be repeated while solving other similar crises around the world. Rupel, Georgian counterpart insist Kosovo is "unique case" "The European Union has many times pointed to Kosovo as a unique case and it should not be viewed as precedent," Rupel, who is visiting the former Soviet republic as head of an EU delegation, said. Georgia is facing secession movements in its provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, who are maintaining de fact independence status. Itar-Tass news agency quoted Rupel as saying that "the EU has solved the issue of sending its mission to Kosovo, meaning that we too will assist the solution of the problem there." As for his hosts, Georgian Foreign Minister David Bakhradze told reporters that "attempts to create a precedent out of Kosovo were not in Georgia's, Russia's, or Europe's interest." "Kosovo is a unique, particular case, and can in no way be used as a precedent for solving other conflicts," he was adamant. "Manipulating the example of Kosovo can become a very dangerous instrument, one that can create problems for Europe's security," Bakhradze concluded.
