BELGRADE The number of asylum-seekers increases year after year in Serbia and is expected to reach around 4,000 by year-end, an Interior Ministry official has said. 8,147 illegal border crossing attempts were foiled since the start of 2013, MUP State Secretary Vladimir Bozovic said on Wednesday. The topics discussed in the meeting included improvement of cooperation between the Interior Ministry and UNHCR in overcoming the problem of asylum-seekers. Bozovic, who is in charge of coordinating internal control and international cooperation activities, pointed that since 2008, when the Law on Asylum came into force, to this day, the number of asylum-seekers has been on the upswing and is expected to reach around 4,000 by the end of 2013. Serbia is also facing the problem of illegal border crossing attempts, noted Bozovic. Bozovic and Arboledo agreed that, in order to solve these problems, all authorized institutions, international organizations and the non-governmental sector must work together and remain open to cooperation. A working group will be formed to draft the national strategy on asylum-seekers, which would include amendments to the Law on Asylum, Božović announced.
