Farmers from Crvenka have been protesting for over a week, blocking the entrance to the Kula municipality building. The farmers claim that both they and the state have been negatively affected by the moves of the municipality and the Ministry of Agriculture, which are denying them the right to purchase state-owned land under the same terms as big companies. Farmers striking in Vojvodina It all began when it was suddenly discovered that a parcel owned by the state of first class land covering 658 hectares had been replaced by a privately owned parcel of significantly inferior quality covering 680 hectares. Last year, that parcel, located next to Crvenka, was leased to farmers. The approval for the land swap was issued by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Property and Restitution Department, the Serbian Attorney’s Office, but not the municipality, which has no authority to decide on that matter. According to the farmers, the municipality has adopted a leasing code that would allow Ljubomir Perisic, the owner of the company that exchanged the land in question, to receive the parcels easier, because they were adjacent to his land. However, the municipality says that the farmers’ accusations are inaccurate and malicious. The same problem with the lease of state-owned land has appeared throughout Vojvodina’s municipalities. No one has yet assumed responsibility, despite the fact that in certain municipalities the land has not even leased, but is being cultivated by private owners.
