Eight arrested in cigarette smuggling bust

Police say they placed eight out of the fifteen members of an organized criminal group led by Stanko Subotić in custody Wednesday.

Subotić is the owner of the Ub-based company MIA, which allegedly illegally imported cigarettes from 1995 to 1997,  to sell them in the black market.

The group is said to have earned EUR 40mn as a result, transferring the money through Montenegro and Macedonia to accounts in Cyprus.

The police statement identified the persons taken into custody as Nebojša Nikolić, Drage Dodeski, Milan Ranković, Miroslav Pešić, Milan Milanović, Miodrag Zavišić, Milan Popivoda and Ivana Olujić.

Stanko Subotić and seven other members of the group remain at large as police continue to search for them.
