Hungarian court to consider Kepiro case
The Jerusalem-based Simon Wiesenthal Center has identified Kepiro as a war criminal and has asked the Hungarian authorities to prosecute him accordingly. The Center quoted the verdict reached in Hungary in 1946, designating Kepiro as a war criminal who participated in the Novi Sad raid as well as in subsequent deportations of Serbian Jews to Nazi death camps.
Kepiro, a lieutenant during the war, denied any involvement in the crimes, saying his duties included supervising patrols during the three days of the raid, from January 21 to 23, 1942, when 1,400 citizens were murdered and thrown into the frozen Danube.
Kepiro returned to Hungary ten years ago from Argentina where he fled after the end of the WW2, to say, “I pity them, innocent people died there”, speaking about the Novi Sad raid victims.
“But I haven’t done what they accuse me of. I don’t know why they say these terrible things, just because I was a member of the police force”, Kepiro was also quoted as saying.
Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Efraim Zuroff on January 24 this year attended the anniversary honoring the innocent victims of the Nazi raid. He urged the Serbian authorities on the occasion to seek Kepiro’s extradition, in order to force Hungary to speed up the process of establishing his responsibility.
