PODGORICA Montenegro is an example in the region when it comes to European integration, but the fight against crime and corruption needs to stay among its top priorities. This was heard from EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, who was in Podgorica on Monday. Ashton: Montenegro sets example in region After a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Foreign Minister Igor Luksic, Ashton told reporters at the headquarters of the EU Delegation in Podgorica it is no accident she chose Montenegro as the first stop on her tour of the Balkans. Montenegro can really serve as an example to other countries in the region and can be proud of its considerable achievements in the European integration process, said the high representative. Ashton said the EU expects the government in Podgorica to conduct constitutional reforms in the justice system, expressing belief that Montenegro will step up to the challenges on its European path. Talking about the presidential election in Montenegro, Ashton called on all sides to be constructive and act in line with legal procedures. Montenegro is experiencing a political crisis following a presidential election, which was won by Filip Vujanovic, a candidate of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, according to the state electoral commission. His opponent Miodrag Lekic is challenging the results due to alleged irregularities. During her Balkan tour, Ashton will go on to visit Tirana and Skopje.
