Amnesty International released on Friday a response to remarks by the Croatian Justice Ministry about the organization's December report. The report reiterated earlier conclusion that in spite of certain progress, Croatia was still failing to provide many of the victims of the 1991-1995 war crimes with justice. Amnesty International responds to Croatia’s remarks In its statement, the AI brought to question certain stands of the Croatian Justice Ministry which stemmed from a wrong interpretation of the AI report dubbed “Behind a wall of silence: Prosecution of war crimes in Croatia”. The AI was particularly concerned about the ministry's position on Croatian parliament Deputy Speaker Vladimir Seks regarding his alleged command responsibility for war crimes. Several days after the report issued by the AI in early December 2010 accusing Seks, Admiral Davor Domazet-Loso and Tomislav Mercep of war crimes against Serbs, Mercep was taken to custody and since then he has been under investigation in Zagreb and Western Slavonija, though Vukovar did not institute any similar proceeding. Mercep is held responsible for murder and disappearance of about 20 Serb civilians in the summer of 1991 before the clashes started, while Seks is suspected of covering those crimes as well as others which took place in other parts of the country. The AI accused Domazet-Loso of involvement in the Operation Medak Pocket and the crimes which were committed in this area.
