A large amount of waste, including animal carcasses and hospital waste has polluted the shores of the Peljesac peninsula and Mljet island in Croatia. Index.hr website reports that several hundred square kilometers have been littered, and that while even waste dumped into the sea in Italy and Greece could have washed up in Croatia, most of the labels that can be read were in Albanian. Croatia's Administration for Protection and Rescue (DUSZ) said that while a certain amount of waste from Albania has been reaching the Mljet area of the Adriatic Sea each year, this time the amount is significantly higher. The Port of Dubrovnik official Nikola Beusan said that the waste was mostly non-organic, and that it is therefore not bio-degradable. "We're talking bottles, needles, catheters.
