Hague orders Croatia to stop search for documents

The Hague Tribunal trial chamber has accepted the demands of Ante Gotovina’s defense and ordered Croatia to terminate its search for documents.

The Hague Tribunal trial chamber has accepted the demands of Ante Gotovina’s defense and ordered Croatia to terminate its search for documents. President Judge Alphons Orie said that the chamber will order Croatia to freeze the search for the documents until further recommendations from the Tribunal. Hague orders Croatia to stop search for documents The documents and computers were confiscated in a police action on December 9, and according to the new ruling, they cannot be viewed by unauthorized personnel. Croatian media stated that there are no documents that the Tribunal is looking for among the confiscated documents. The Hague is interested in documents related to the part of the indictment involving the shelling of Knin and other cities in the Krajina region. Along with the 10,000 pages of documents that are state and military secrets, the police also found 200 grams of explosives, hand grenades and ammunition. Gotovina, Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak are on trial for war crimes allegedly committed during the Operation Storm action of 1995. The Hague Tribunal has been in search of documents from the operation’s artillery log since 2007, which are necessary for the process being led against the three generals. Because of Croatia’s lack of cooperation with the Tribunal and its inability to provide these documents, several EU countries are blocking the start of negotiations for the legislative charters of Croatia’s association process with the EU.
