Slovenians want Croatia in NATO, but not in EU

Most Slovenians would vote for Croatia’s entrance into NATO if a referendum were held now, but are against the country’s accession into the EU.

Most Slovenians would vote for Croatia’s entrance into NATO if a referendum were held now, but are against the country’s accession into the EU. The results of a survey carried about by Slovenian daily Delo, in which 398 people participated, show that 49.7 percent of Slovenians would vote against Croatia joining the EU, while 32.7 percent would vote in favor. Slovenians want Croatia in NATO, but not in EU At the same time, nearly half of Slovenians—46.8 percent—would accept Croatia’s entrance into NATO, while 37.5 percent would oppose it. The survey also showed that the majority of Slovenians support Prime Minister Borut Pahor’s government, which set as a condition for Croatia’s EU entrance the resolution of a border dispute between the two countries, which has already lasted 17 years. Most Slovenians believe it would be better to resolve the shared border problem through bilateral dialogue, rather than international intervention. Because of the border dispute, Slovenia blocked approaching discussions between Croatian and the EU, which led to strained relations between Ljubljana and Zagreb.
